Design 614 ~ Van de Stadt 107 ~ Eos

Recently RT - Yachtbau, Germany / Slovenia, with whom Van de Stadt Design has developed an excellent relationship during more than 15 years of co-operation, commissioned us to design and build a 107 ft yacht, "Eos", for a German client.

The brief was to design a handsome-looking offshore cruising yacht that could be handled with a minimum number of crew, and with a high degree of independent operation of the various components so as to increase safety and comfort. Further criteria included a fuel capacity for a 4000-NM range under engine, and a maximum draft of 2.75 m.

To meet these criteria we designed a low-resistance, stable hull form with moderate sheer and overhangs and a long waterline to give good speed potential and form stability. The bulbous shape of the keel ensures a very low center of gravity of the ballast, while the end plate provides maximum lift. Under less stringent design criteria, however, it would be advisable to opt for more draft.

The sail plan that "Eos" carries is based on the latest developments in high-performance offshore cruisers as featured on so many Van de Stadt designs such as the Trintellas, the Van de Stadt 77, Samoa, and other one-off designs. The main design goal of the high-aspect mainsail (sail area 307 m2) together with a 215 m2 non-overlapping headsail focuses on ease of handling in combination with a good ratio between driving force and sail area. Both the main and the jib are furled on hydraulic roller-furling units.

The well insulated engine room with full standing headroom contains an MTU 12V 183 TE 62 diesel 550 kW (750 hp) as its main engine, to which a 25 kW hydraulically driven generator is connected. To ensure maneuverability in relatively narrow ports even at high wind strengths, a separate MTU 6V 183 AA 51 diesel engine (150 hp) supplies plenty of hydraulic power to the two bowthrusters as well as the sternthruster. A second generator set (35 kW) will charge seven separated battery banks, each with its own battery charger, and supply current to the watermaker and air conditioning. A 6 kW emergency generator set as well as pumps and a hydraulic power unit for the winches and windlass are fitted so that all components can be easily reached for maintenance purposes. A separate air-conditioned control room for temperature-sensitive equipment is located on port.

The deck layout with its flush mounted hatches and handrails reflects the desire to create a flat, uncluttered deck without any obstructions. The cockpit is divided into a steering and a sail-handling section. It has a walk-through opening to the deck in the coamings as well as an entry to the generous, comfortable cabin, which accommodates a large number of seats and tables and a second navigation corner.

The pilothouse, which can be reached going down only two steps, accommodates the large navigation corner on starboard, featuring high-tech navigation and communication equipment, which includes remote control instruments to allow inside steering.

On port the U-shaped settee corner, raised to allow a 360° view, creates an atmosphere of space and comfort.

The aft space, which is large enough to have lockers for spare parts and to accommodate diving equipment, a jetski and a workbench, is dominated by a 4.20 m dinghy which can be launched through the wide, hydraulically operated transom door. A deck-integrated foldable crane with a lifting capacity of 1000 kg and a 4-metre operating radius is installed on the port side.

The interior of this Van de Stadt 107 is a wonderland of fine stylish joinery, detail and innovation. The owner's cabin aft can be split into two cabins granting the owner's wife undisturbed sleep, while the owner/skipper is on watch. Each cabin has its own head and separate shower or bath facilities.

Forward of the pilothouse, just abaft the dining area on port, a generous galley is located, featuring plenty of refrigerator and freezer space, a four-burner cooker, microwave/hot-air oven, dishwasher, washing/drying combination, and ample storage space. The starboard side features an efficient forward-facing navigator's station with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment. Large control and switch panels situated next to as well as behind the navigator's seat give full control over all the yacht's technical equipment.

Two double-berthed guest cabins, each with a head and separate shower unit, are situated forward of the mast, while further towards the forepeak a crew cabin with its own access to the deck is located. This also serves as a general escape route in case of an emergency.

Below floor level the neatly installed plumbing connects the hull-integrated 5,500-litre fresh-water tanks, the 12,400-litre fuel tanks and several sump tanks with a total capacity of 4,000 liters.

Our goal in designing this Van de Stadt 107 was to create a world cruiser that is fast, safe, stable, comfortable and, last but not least, easy to sail and handle. We are convinced that she will be an eye-catcher in every port that she calls into.
